Linder Votes To Increase Employees’ Access To Health Care
Three House Bills Improve Health Care Access by Reducing Businesses’ Costs Washington, D.C. - Congressman John Linder (R-GA) joined with a majority of his House colleagues this week in voting to improve Americans’ access to health care, by reducing health care costs for employers. Three House bills were passed this week, which will improve small businesses’ access to health care, allow for greater flexibility in employees flexible spending accounts (FSAs), and provide medical liability reform.
“This is the second time the House has passed these health care reform bills in the 108th Congress,” Linder stated. “By passing this legislation again, we hope to convey to the Senate that we are serious about improving health care for all Americans, and they need to take action on these important health care reform bills as well.”
Due to continued health care premium increases, many employers pass these expenses along to employees through higher deductibles and co-payments, as well as reduced coverage. This year marks the fifth straight year that employer health care costs have increased by double-digits. In 2004, employers are estimated to pay 12 percent more for employee health care than in 2003. Additionally, the high cost to insure doctors against frivolous medical malpractice lawsuits is severely reducing access to and quality of health care in America.
“As health care costs rise, employers are forced to scale-back coverage. These measures are designed to reverse this trend,” Linder continued.
The House passed H.R. 4280, a medical malpractice liability limitation bill, to protect health care providers, H.R. 4281, a small business medical care bill, to allow small businesses to create Association Health Plans (AHPs), and H.R. 4279, which allows up to $500 of funds contained in a FSA to be rolled over for use during the next calendar year.
These three health care bills are the first component of an eight-week series that will prepare our economy for the new century. Other components of this agenda that will be addressed in coming weeks include energy, taxes, and education.
